Planet earth is called the Blue Planet because two third of the planet is covered with water – the wonder liquid of the universe. Water is considered as the priceless gift  of nature.

Water plays a major role in the life of all living beings, especially for humans. An average person in the developing world uses 2.64 gallons of water a day. About 70% of the earth is covered by water. Even though there is a great mass of water , only a small part of it is clean to be use for drinking, cooking and other purposes. Water is used for cultivation and almost 70% of the available fresh water gets used for irrigation in agriculture. If there is a drought season it is difficult to cultivate most of the crops. Then people will suffer without food and income. Water is also used for generating electricity. If a drought exists it may lead to power cuts and it will affect the economy of the country. Water is a main source in various industries too.

Today the world is facing a water crisis which will worsen with time as the freshwater resources around the world dwindle drop by drop. With more than one billion people around the world lacking access to safe drinking water and over two million children dying every year due to the lack of safe drinking water and diseases associated with it. About 80% diseases in the developing world are caused by contaminated water. In many countries the primary reason people can not rise about the poverty line is the water scarcity. Women and children bear the burdens disproportionately. Most often they are force to walk for miles in the scorching sun in search of water to meet the requirements of their families and communities. The water and crisis claims more lives through diseases than any war claims trough guns. Freshwater ecosystems have been severely degraded and it is estimated that about half of the world’s wetlands have been lost and more than 20% of the world 10000 known freshwater species have become extinct, threatened or endangered.

There is a lot man can do to conserve water. Governments must impose strict laws to protect all water resources. People who pollute waterways should be punished severely. Releasing garbage, toxic acids, chemicals and other industrial wastes should be stopped and unnecessary consumption of water in households should be minimized. A lot of water can be saved by not keeping taps open while engaging other activities. Deforestation that is taking place rapidly all over world should be banned and new programs should be launched to expand the forest cover. Pay much attention to collect rain water and store it for agricultural purposes and proper irrigation systems should be developed to low down the waste of water. So make a commitment to save every drop and not let it go to waste as water is the life blood of all beings.
